Gil Goldstein is widely recognized for his work as a keyboardist, composer, arranger and producer. He has made significant musical contributions to the music of Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall, Randy Brecker, Milton Nascimento, Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Mike Stern, The New York Voices, and so many more.

Romero Lubambo, a native of Rio de Janeiro, moved to New York City in 1985. He has studied extensively in the many styles of Brazilian music. He has performed and recorded with Astrud Gilberto, Phil Woods, Art Farmer and Michel Petrucciani.

Toninho, from Minas Gerais, Brazil, is hailed as the rhythm ambassador of Brazil. For more information about Toninho Horta, please refer to Big World's two productions for him entitled "Durango Kid."

Armando Marçal, from Rio, has been surrounded by Brazilian music his whole life. His father, known in Brazil as "Mestre (Master) Marçal," was the most noted percussionist of Brazil, playing a significant role in the percussion segment of Brazil's "Carnaval." Both Armando and Gil Goldstein were an important part of Pat Metheny's "Secret Story" recording project, and the World tour that followed.

Maucha Adnet, also from Rio, moved to New York in 1988. Her beautiful voice has been recorded on the works of Arto Lindsey, Caetano Veloso, Dorival Caymmi, Chico Buarque and Toninho Horta. From 1984 through 1994, Maucha performed, toured and recorded with the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. She has recorded on four of his albums, touring extensively with Jobim throughout Brazil, USA, Japan, Israel and Europe.

Review
Keyboardist Goldstein, a longtime Brazil nut, teams up with guitarist Lubambo for a beautiful Brazil-meets-jazz song set that kicks off with a fresh variation of "My Foolish Heart." A lot of music comes out of a compact ensemble, featuring Adnet's supple voice doubling melodies, and a flexible but spare instrumentation. Goldstein's tunes, "The Phoenicians" and "Valentine's Day" are deceptively friendly inventions that go in unexpected directions. Highly mobile modulations keep the driving "Corenteza" in perpetual motion.

Also of note: Goldstein is one of those keyboardists helping to make the world safe for the accordion, that unjustly maligned instrument. He squeezes eloquence and longing out of his squeezebox. -Josef Woodard/Downbeat
